How to use the sentence summarizer
- Paste one or more wordy sentences.
- Keep Bullets to shorten each sentence separately, or pick TL;DR to merge them into one sentence.
- Press Shorten sentences and compare the word counts.
What gets cut
Most long sentences are long for the same few reasons: wordy phrases that have one-word equivalents (“in light of the fact that” means “because”, “at some point in the future” means “later”), stacked qualifiers (“generally speaking, not particularly”), nominalisations that hide the verb (“made the decision to” instead of “decided”), and clauses that repeat what the reader already knows. The sentence summarizer removes these and keeps the subject, the action and any facts.
Plain-language guides such as the UK Government Digital Service style guide and the US federal plainlanguage.gov guidelines both recommend short sentences, typically averaging 15 to 20 words, because they are easier to understand on the first read.
Sentence vs paragraph vs text
Use this page when you want every sentence kept but shorter, for example when editing your own writing. If you want only the main point of a passage, use the paragraph summarizer; for whole documents, use the main AI text summarizer.
Questions people ask
How do I summarize a sentence?
Find the subject and the main action, keep any facts or numbers, and delete wordy phrases, repeated ideas and qualifiers that do not change the meaning. Or paste it here and press Shorten sentences.
Can it summarize several sentences into one?
Yes. Choose TL;DR and all the sentences you paste are merged into a single short sentence.
Will it change my meaning?
It is instructed to keep the meaning, the facts and the numbers of each sentence. Always reread the result, especially for legal or technical text where one word can matter.
