Summary
Your summary appears here. Paste text (or try a sample), choose a format, then press Summarize.
How to use the pdf summarizer
- Press Upload. PDFs are read locally with Mozilla’s PDF.js, page by page; Word files are unpacked in your browser too.
- Check the extracted text. Delete references, appendices or anything you don’t need summarized.
- Pick a format and press Summarize. Only the text is sent to the AI, never the file.
How it handles long PDFs
SmartSummarize takes up to 60,000 characters at once, about 25 to 30 pages of dense text. Anything over 20,000 characters is read in sections, and the section notes are merged into one summary, so nothing in the middle gets skipped. If a PDF is longer still, the first 60,000 characters are loaded and you are told so; summarize the rest separately (your recent summaries are kept in this browser under Your saved summaries).
Tip: for reports, skip the table of contents and appendices. For papers, use the research paper summarizer, which knows to look for methods, findings and limitations.
Scanned PDFs
A scanned PDF is a stack of page photos with no selectable text, so there is nothing to extract. If you get the “no selectable text” message, run the file through OCR first (many phone scanner apps and desktop PDF readers include it), then try again.
Questions people ask
Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
No. The file is opened and its text extracted inside your browser. Only the text you choose to summarize is sent to the AI when you press Summarize, and it is not stored by SmartSummarize.
Why does it say my PDF has no text?
The PDF is probably a scan, meaning each page is an image. Run OCR on it first, or copy the text from another source.
Can it summarize a 100-page PDF?
Up to about 25 to 30 dense pages (60,000 characters) are summarized in one go, in sections that are then merged. For a 100-page document, summarize it in three or four parts, or chapter by chapter.
Does it work with password-protected PDFs?
Remove the password first (open it in your PDF reader and save or print an unprotected copy), then choose that copy.
